How to switch credit card processors in Ontario

Switching processors is easier than reading your statement.

We handle the paperwork, the install and the handover from your old provider. Here is exactly how it goes, and straight answers to the questions merchants ask most. More detail in our guides.

The switch, step by step

Four steps. You do the first one.

01

Tell us about your business

What you sell, roughly what you process a month and who you use now. Fill in the quote form, message us on WhatsApp, or tell us over the phone.

02

Get one page back

We read your real card mix and send back the plan we would put you on, what it costs, and what we think you save — usually inside one business day. No obligation.

03

We set it up and install it

Once you say yes, we handle the application, then bring the terminal to your counter. Out of the box and taking payments in under 10 minutes, with your staff shown how it works.

04

We help you leave the old provider

Merchants tell us this is the part they dread. We walk you through cancelling your previous provider so nothing is left running in the background.

Have these ready

  • Your rough monthly card sales (or expected volume if you are new to cards)
  • Your current provider agreement, if you have one — so we can check for cancellation terms
  • Your business details and the account you want deposits to land in

We will tell you exactly what the application needs for your business type.

Switching

I’m in a contract with my current provider. Can I still switch?

Usually, yes — but some agreements carry a cancellation fee. Tell us who you are with and when the agreement ends, and we will tell you what leaving actually costs before you commit to anything, so you can compare it against what you would save.

How long does the whole switch take?

The quote usually comes back inside one business day. Once your account is approved, the terminal itself takes under 10 minutes to set up. We give you a realistic install date with the quote.

Will I have downtime while switching?

We plan the install so your new terminal is taking payments before the old one is switched off. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android also gives you a backup way to get paid from day one.

I’ve never taken cards before. Can you still quote me?

Yes. Tell us roughly what you expect to process each month and your typical sale, and we will recommend a plan and terminal from there.

Pricing & rates

Is there really no monthly fee?

None of our three plans — Fixed, Variable or Surcharge — carries a monthly fee. You pay per transaction, at the rates published on our pricing page.

What is interchange, and why does it change?

Interchange is the fee the card networks and issuing banks charge on every credit transaction. It varies by card type — a premium rewards card costs more to accept than a basic one. On our Variable plan you pay interchange and the network assessment at cost, plus 0.20%, so you can see exactly where every cent goes.

Why is your estimate different from my quote?

The calculator works off published rates and your own assumptions. A real quote looks at your actual business — your card mix, card types and average sale — which is what really moves the number.

Do rates ever vary from what is published?

Rates shown are standard published pricing and may vary with business type, card mix and processing history. Your quote will state the exact rates that apply to you.

Surcharging in Canada

Is it legal to surcharge credit cards in Canada?

Yes, in most of Canada (full detail in our surcharging guide). Since October 2022, card brand rules allow merchants to add a surcharge to credit card transactions, capped at the merchant’s cost of acceptance and no more than 2.4%. Our Surcharge plan uses 2.40%.

Surcharging is not permitted in Quebec, and is not applied where card brand rules do not allow it.

Can I surcharge debit cards?

No. Surcharges apply to credit cards only — debit and prepaid cards cannot be surcharged. On our Surcharge plan, debit is a flat $0.05 per transaction that you pay.

What do I have to tell customers?

Customers have to be told before they pay, and the surcharge has to show on the receipt. Our terminals handle the disclosure at the point of sale, and we will tell you what signage you need at your entrance and counter.

Will surcharging cost me customers?

Customers who would rather not pay it can use debit. Many of our merchants run it without issue — one told us on Trustpilot it is “saving us hundreds of dollars monthly.” If you would rather not, Fixed or Variable keep the cost on your side.

Hardware & support

Can I keep my current terminal?

Sometimes. It depends on the device and which processor it is tied to. Pick “I want to keep my current hardware” on the quote form, tell us the make and model, and we will tell you whether it can move with you.

Clover or Square — which should I get?

Square suits the lightest possible setup or merchants already on Square. Clover suits businesses that need a full counter — kitchen display, kiosk, pay-at-table or built-in loyalty. We place both, so we will recommend the one that fits. See Clover and Square.

What happens if my terminal stops working at night?

Call 416-640-0902. The support line is live 24/7 — a real person, no ticket, no callback window. If it needs hands on the device, a technician comes to your counter, typically within 2–4 hours across the GTA.

Do you serve businesses outside Toronto?

Yes. We are based in North York and serve the GTA and the rest of Ontario. On-site response times quoted on this site apply across the GTA.

Security & PCI

Is card data safe on Clover and Square terminals?

Clover and Square terminals encrypt card data at the moment the card is tapped, inserted or keyed, so your business does not store raw card numbers.

Do I need to do anything for PCI compliance?

Every business that accepts cards has PCI obligations. What applies to you depends on your processor and how you take payments. Ask us at setup and we will walk you through what your account requires.

Free quote

Tell us what you sell. Get one honest page back.

No obligation and no long form. We look at how your business takes cards and tell you, usually within one business day, what you would pay and what you would save.
